Sea Trees

Sea Trees was conceived during a residency at Centrum in Port Townsend WA. It is inspired by the driftwood found on many Washington beaches and an Indigenous Peoples’ story from the far north where trees do not grow on the land. Because these people never saw a tree fall and wash downriver to the sea, their legend was that the driftwood trees grew in the sea and were washed ashore like shells and stones and bones of whales. I used this story to imagine an alternate creation myth for trees with my prints and photos.
