Closure is made in celebration of the work done by all women who have sewed out of necessity or for pleasure and then shared their skills with the generations of daughters and granddaughters who loved them and mourn their passing. Hand sewn, it is a book of recollections and conjectures about my grandmother’s life: what it was like to marry in a wedding gown sewn by her mother and raise a family, clothing them in hand sewn clothes, then to share her talent with her granddaughter.

Materials: The book block is unbleached muslin to which collagraph images, text and fabrics were hand and machine applied. Text was transferred to the pages with a variety of techniques including iron-on transfer paper, rubber stamps and direct printing. Cotton fabrics, trim, notions and embroidery further embellish the pages. The interior of the pages were stabilized with interfacing, and the entire book was bound in a soft cover.
